We at themathlab.com have used
this software for many years with all ages of students. It never fails
to captivate, entertain, and ultimately educate.
We highly recommend it as an
introductory activity to our famous Architecture
Project. You will never look at a city again with the same
eyes after playing this game. The importance of roads, electricity, and
the three zones, industrial, residential,
and commercial will become part of
your everyday understanding.
Read below for a quick tour
of the software, then find it or buy it and give it a try. You'll be glad
you did.

The
introduction looks like this and you want to pick "Start New
City". |
2 |
|
Once in, you get to decide
what year and whether you want an easy, medium or hard game. We
recommend the year 2050 and an easy game to begin.
This is
also where you get to name your city. Give it a cool name because
that name will be displayed on the daily newspaper throughout the
game.

This
is your toolbar. It has tons of stuff available to you. You can zone
land, build roads, power plants, electric lines, schools, fire halls,
libraries, police stations, and tons more. You can even bulldoze over
what you build. But, you must always remember that EVERY action COSTS
MONEY. You must be careful not to bankrupt your city with overbuilding.

Yellow
squares are zoned for industry
to give your people, also known as sims, places to work.
Blue squares are zoned commercial
to give your sims places to shop.
Green squares are zoned residential
to give your sims nice areas to live.
Roads must connect
all three zones. |
5 |
|
Your
zones must be conneted with power lines before anyone will come to
live. Hold down the red lightning bolt on the toolbar and select power
plant from the drop down menu. Place your power plant close to the
industrial zone. Then use the red lightning bolt menu to plant power
lines. Don't forget to connect all three zones with power lines.

Now
that they have places to live, work ,and shop, and roads to get around
on, and electricity to live by, the people, known as sims, will start
to automatically build establishment in your city. You can zoom in
and actually see them drive their cars and build their buildings.
It is really cool. The program does it for you as soon as you set
the city up for growth. |
7 |
|
If
you want to build without the sims growing, set the "speed"
menu to PAUSE. If you want faster growth set it to Llama or Cheetah.
Be careful of African Swallow on a fast computer.
It grows so fast we could not get to the stop controls to turn it
off easily. |
Now go give
it a try. Have fun!
