Customizable Proportion World Test
printable version / Change the names as you like.

Solve each problem by setting up a proportion and or a product of rates. When you have each answer, cross off the letter it corresponds to in the decoder grid below. When all the correct answers are crossed off, only the password to the treasure will remain. You can enter the treasure room at the bottom of the page with the correct password.

1.) can do 5 pullups in 7 seconds. Yes it does make the veins pop out on his neck when he does them but all the guys in his gym class wish THEY could do it. Assuming he can keep pulling at this gut wrenching rate, how many will he complete in a minute?

2.) can do 3 ONE-ARM pull-ups in 8 seconds. If this iron man of steel, continues to pump his body to the limit for five full minutes, how many will he complete?

3.) While on a trip to the beach, traveled 579 miles in 7.8 hours. If he had his ultra, turbo, cruise control engaged and maintained a constant rate of speed during those hours, how far did he go in 2 hours, to the nearest tenth of a mile?

4.) While doing research for her "Food is You" class, found that 16 out of 47 people chew gum daily. Today, the population of Indiana, Pa is 13,642. Research suggests that how many of them will chew gum today? (round to the nearest whole person)

5.) DOES YOUR MIND BELONG TO YOU? (That may depend on the amount of TV you watch.)

multimedia classes did analysis of American TV, and found that out of every 9 minutes a television viewer is exposed to 2.5 minutes of commercial influencing. So if you watch 4 hours of TV per day, exactly how many minutes is your mind being influenced by advertisers?

6.) Since his multimedia class found that out of every 9 minutes, a television viewer is exposed to 2.5 minutes of commercial influencing, is concerned that his mind may not be his own, but in fact the property of some warped, advertising, gurus who are determined to make him buy clothes 5 times more expensive than they need to be and drink sugar laden liquids of various interstellar colors filled with enough caffeine to make him run around like a rat on heroine only to then need the lifesaving protection of waxy chemical deodorants so that he will smell attractive enough to gain the love of the sexiest babe in school.

estimates that he watches an average of 2 hours of TV per day. How many full hours of straight commercial influencing will this be in a year?

HINT: You will need to set up a proportion to find out how many minutes each day he see these commercials. Then set up a proportion to find how many minutes per year. Then set up a proportion to find how many hours per year.

7.) If earns $5 per day cleaning restrooms at the local ice skating rink, how many years will it take him to earn $1,000,000? Round your answer to the nearest tenth of a year.

8.) If earns $9.50 an hour, working as a dog catcher, and works 8 hours every day, and NEVER has a day off. To the nearest year, how many years will it take her to make a million dollars?

9.) made a bet with her friend Wilbur. She bet him $100 that she could count 1,000,000 seconds before her 15th birthday three days from now. He thought she would give up and quit before she reached her goal, so he said, "Sure I'll bet you. That's the easiest $100 bucks I'll ever make."

Now Sara is a very determined strong young woman and she will NOT quit. BUT, is it humanly possible for her to do it? To the nearest tenth of a day, how many days will it take to count 1,000,000 seconds?
NOTE: This is a multiplication of rates problem.

10.) loves to burn her own CD's from music she downloads off of the Internet. It takes her 15 minutes to download a 2.5 megabyte song if it is coming from a computer hooked to a 56 kbps modem. The same song will only take 1.2 minutes to download from a cable modem however. How much time will she save if she downloads a four megabyte song from a cable modem instead of a 56kbps modem?

HINT: You have to solve 2 proportions here and then compare the results.
